Easter Weekend in Whale Cove

So Friday Night started with a blizzard that we walked through to get to a potluck and then walked home to find a large snow drift in front of the house.

Saturday was a Blizzard and we went for a short walk. Sunday was better and I went into work for a few hours.

Monday, today, is beautiful. We heard that there were community events happening so we headed out for a walk and discovered the kids on the sliding hill having an Easter Egg Hunt.  This was at the very end when the eggs were done.  Whale Cove Spring doesn't look like a Southern Spring.

But it really did feel warm.  We took off our mitts and no hood for me. It was only -13 and we were too hot in our parkas!

We headed out onto the ice, where they were setting up for races with the snowmobiles. One of the Elders was there in her traditional outfit to see the events and she was quite happy to have her picture taken.  She is a Voisey.  Inuglak Voisey is the "Kabloonak" who married an Inuk woman and stayed in this community.  He had been hired by the Hudson's Bay but loved it and stayed here.  Our school is named after him.

His original cabin is still on the hill up to the Fuel Storage.  It, like many things here has fallen into ruin as materials are so difficult to obtain for maintenance.  The Housing situation is DESPERATE!

The ice is interesting to walk on and full of cracks like this one.  It is plowed in some areas for trucks to go out as well as the snowmobiles and 4x4's that you see commonly.  We walked out and around quite a ways.  The next shot shows the group on the ice from part of "downtown" .
Whale Cove actually has an uptown and a downtown.  We live uptown.  Essentially Uptown is on the hill.  There are no street names as they aren't needed and the cars and trucks that drive around are sporting license plates from across Canada.  Everyone lives at a Unit Number.  We are 136B, and most people know exactly where you are from that and the colour of your house.  Not sure anyone is actually licensed to drive any but the big trucks and the School Bus.
